If you are exporting timber, wooden furniture, or using wooden pallets to ship your goods across international borders, there is an acronym you cannot afford to ignore: ISPM-15. Ignorance of this standard can result in your shipments being quarantined, fumigated at astronomical costs, or simply destroyed at the port of entry.

What is ISPM-15?

ISPM-15 stands for the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15. Created by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), its sole purpose is to prevent the international spread of disease and insects that could negatively affect plants or ecosystems.

Insects like the Asian Longhorned Beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer have historically devastated forests in North America and Europe after hitchhiking inside raw wooden packaging materials from other continents.

How Do You Comply?

To be ISPM-15 compliant, solid wood packaging material (and often the raw timber being exported) must be treated using one of two approved methods:

Heat Treatment (HT): The wood must be heated until its core temperature reaches 56°C (133°F) for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. This effectively pasteurizes the wood, killing any living organisms inside.
Methyl Bromide Fumigation (MB): The wood is enclosed in a chamber and fumigated with methyl bromide gas for a specific duration. (Note: Many countries are phasing this out due to environmental concerns, making Heat Treatment the preferred global standard).

The IPPC Stamp

Once treated by a certified facility, the wood is stamped with an internationally recognized IPPC mark. This stamp includes a country code, the unique registration number of the treatment provider, and a code indicating the treatment used (HT or MB).

Customs officials worldwide look for this stamp. If it is missing or illegible on solid wood packaging, your shipment will be held.
